Does Facebook or Instagram notify someone when you take a screenshot?

Short answer: no, Facebook and Instagram do not tell anyone when you screenshot a post, a story or a profile. The exceptions are in private messages: disappearing messages and end-to-end encrypted chats. Here is the full picture for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Snapchat and LinkedIn in 2026, taken from each app's own help pages.

Facebook

Posts, stories, profiles, photos and comments: no notification of any kind. Facebook has never had the feature, and Meta's help pages mention screenshot alerts only for Messenger's encrypted chats. What Facebook does show is who viewed your story, which is a different thing: viewing is recorded, screenshotting is not.

Instagram

The same goes for posts, reels, stories, profiles and normal messages. Instagram's help center lists two exceptions, both in direct messages:

  • Disappearing photos and videos (view once, or allow replay): since December 2024 Instagram does not notify, it blocks the screenshot. Its help page says taking one is now disabled.
  • Disappearing messages, the chat timer available in some regions in one-to-one chats: Instagram says you will get a notification if it detects a screenshot.

Messenger

Meta's help page says that if it detects a screenshot or screen recording of an end-to-end encrypted chat, you and everyone in the chat are notified, and adds that not every screenshot can be detected. Vanish mode, the older feature that did this, is no longer supported.

WhatsApp

No notifications. WhatsApp blocks screenshots of view-once photos and videos instead, and ordinary chats can be screenshotted freely. Advanced Chat Privacy, added in April 2025, stops people exporting a chat and auto-saving its media; it does not stop screenshots.

Snapchat and LinkedIn

Snapchat Support's page What do the icons on the Chat Screen mean?, with sections for sent, opened, received and viewed icons and a Screenshot Icons section: a screenshot has been taken of your Snap without audio, with audio, and of your Chat.
Snapchat's own help page lists the screenshot icons (captured 3 October 2026, cookies set to essential only).

Snapchat is the app that does notify: a screenshot of a Snap or a chat puts a “screenshot taken” icon in the other person's chat, and story viewers who took one are marked. LinkedIn does not notify anyone about screenshots; it may show that you viewed a profile, depending on your settings.

Saving a whole post with its comments

A screenshot on a phone or with Win+Shift+S catches one screen. To keep a long post with all its comments, or a whole profile page, in one image or PDF on a computer, use a full page screenshot tool for Chrome such as FullPage Capture, which we make. It captures what your browser shows you, nothing more, and saves it to your disk. Keep the last section of the FAQ below in mind before you share what you saved.

Questions

Does Facebook notify someone if I screenshot their post or story?

No. Facebook has no screenshot notification for posts, stories, profiles, photos or comments. Meta documents notifications only for end-to-end encrypted chats in Messenger.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a post, a story or a profile?

No. Instagram's help pages describe only two cases, both in direct messages: disappearing photos and videos, which can no longer be screenshotted at all, and disappearing messages, where the sender is notified.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?

Not for an ordinary chat. For disappearing messages, yes: Instagram says you will be notified if it detects a screenshot. For view-once or replayable photos and videos, the screenshot is blocked.

Does Messenger notify screenshots?

In end-to-end encrypted chats, yes: Meta says that if it detects a screenshot or screen recording, everyone in the chat is notified, though not every screenshot can be detected. Vanish mode, which used to do this, is no longer supported.

Does WhatsApp notify screenshots?

No. WhatsApp blocks screenshots of view-once photos and videos instead, and ordinary chats can be screenshotted without any notice. Advanced Chat Privacy blocks exporting a chat, not screenshots.

Does Snapchat notify screenshots?

Yes. A screenshot of a Snap or a chat shows the other person a "screenshot taken" icon, story viewers who screenshotted are marked, and screenshotting a Friendship Profile may notify that friend.

Does LinkedIn notify screenshots?

No. LinkedIn may show that you viewed a profile, depending on your privacy settings, but nothing about screenshots.

Is it all right to screenshot someone's post?

Being able to and being allowed to are different questions. Saving something for your own records is generally fine; sharing someone's private post, story or messages can break trust, the platform's rules and, in some places, the law. If in doubt, ask.
