How to export a Claude chat to PDF
Claude can export your whole account, share a chat as a link, and export an artifact as a Word file or PDF. What it cannot do is save the conversation you are looking at as a PDF. Here are the routes that exist in 2026, the one built-in trick that gets close, and how to keep any Claude chat exactly as it looks.

The short answer
For a backup, use Settings → Privacy → Export data. For one chat as a document, make a public link, expand the long messages and print the link to PDF. For one chat as it looks on screen, without making it public, capture it and save the capture as a PDF.
Method 1: export your Claude data
Click your initials in the bottom left, then Settings → Privacy → Export data. It runs on the web and in Claude Desktop, not on iOS or Android. A download link arrives by email and expires 24 hours later. On Team and Enterprise plans only the Primary Owner can run it.
It is the whole account, as data files for keeping or moving elsewhere, not a readable document. Anthropic's help page does not even list the format. There is no way to pick one conversation.
Method 2: a share link, then print it
Sharing changed in September 2026. Share now invites specific people by email by default; they have to sign in to read it. A public link, on Free, Pro and Max, opens for anyone without an account. Both are snapshots: later messages appear only after Update shared chat. Artifacts are included, attached files are not.
The public share page happens to be the friendliest page of any AI chat to print: it scrolls normally and Anthropic gave it print styles. That makes this the best built-in way to a PDF:
Make a public link. In the chat, click Share (top right), switch the visibility to Public and copy the link. Public links exist on Free, Pro and Max; in Team and Enterprise a link only works inside the organisation.
Open it and expand every message. Open the link in a new tab. Long messages are folded behind Show more: click each one, or the folded part will not be in the PDF.
Print to PDF. Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac), choose Save as PDF and save. Then turn the link off again in Share if you do not want the chat public.
The catches: the chat has to be public for a while, the print styles change how it looks, and every folded message has to be opened by hand first.
Method 3: export the artifact, copy the answer
If what you need is the document Claude wrote rather than the conversation, open the artifact and use Export (Word, PDF, Markdown, Google Docs, PowerPoint or HTML, depending on its kind). Older artifacts, made before 16 September 2026, have copy and download buttons instead. Every answer also has a Copy button. All of this works one piece at a time.
Method 4: capture the chat and save it as a PDF
A capture keeps the conversation the way it looked, your messages and Claude's, code and artifacts in the panel, without making anything public. These steps are for FullPage Capture, a free extension to export Claude chats to PDF, which we make.
Install FullPage Capture. From the Chrome Web Store or Edge Add-ons. Free, no account, no watermark.
Open the chat. Your chat in claude.ai, or its share link. Expand any long message you want in full.
Click the extension icon. Or press Alt+Shift+K. The page scrolls from the first message to the last and is stitched into one picture, exactly as you see it.
Save as PDF or PNG. Pick Full image for one long PDF page, or Letter or A4 with breaks that fall between lines. Or keep one tall PNG.

Keep your Claude chats as PDFs. Free, no account, nothing is uploaded.

Questions
Does Claude have an export to PDF button for chats?
No. Since 16 September 2026 artifacts made from a template have an Export button with Word, PDF, Markdown, Google Docs and more, but it exports the artifact, not the conversation around it. The account export covers everything you have and arrives as data files.
Can I export a single Claude conversation?
Not from the export: it is the whole account. A share link covers one chat, and you can print or capture that, or capture the chat directly.
Does a shared Claude chat include the files I attached?
No. The snapshot holds the messages and any artifacts, but attached files and connector data are left out, and people viewing the link cannot download files.
Do I have to make my chat public to save it?
Only for the print route. Capturing works on your own chat view in claude.ai, which nobody else can see.
Can I export Claude chats from the mobile app?
No. The account export runs only on the web and in Claude Desktop, and sharing with specific people is web only. Phones do not run browser extensions either.
Is the PDF searchable?
The free capture PDF is a picture of the chat. FullPage Capture Pro adds a text layer so it can be searched and copied. A PDF printed from the share page is searchable already. What Pro adds
The same job in the other assistants: save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF and export a Gemini chat to PDF.
Try it on the page you are reading. Free, no account, no watermark. Nothing is uploaded.
